Madrid is one of the more popular holiday resorts in Spain. The city has blossomed tremendously since the Franco regime. Today’s constitutional monarchy is well respected and established with the sereno being obsolete and technology taking the frontline.

However, with the 4.5 million inhabitants in Madrid, there are many traditions and culture that are still deeply entrenched and widely practiced today; hence, there is a myriad of fiestas and folklore that are active and widely celebrated throughout the year.

Madrid is a delightful city that is affordable for an exciting adventure holiday for most tourists any time of the year.

New Year Fiestas

Any time is a good time to visit Madrid. But the New Year celebrations in Madrid are equal to none elsewhere. The spectacular celebrations draw in thousands of revelers to Puerta del Sol. There is a constant rhythm of music, dancing and merry making with free flow of wine throughout the night.

The fiesta has many people attempting to eat 12 grapes in the last 12 seconds of the old year to bring on good luck. All of Spain is totally involved in this fiesta whether on the television or in person at the venue. The big clock beats out the New Year chimes to the delight of the massive crowd before the city is painted red with great party by one and all.

Close to the New Year on January 5th, Madrid joins other Spanish towns in the famous three Magi procession where 3 representatives donning medieval garment go around giving gifts to children.

Mid Year Fiestas

Another popular fiesta that is well celebrated in Madrid is the San Isidro fiesta on May 15th who is the city’s honored patron. There is a lot of merry making and festivity with plenty of concerts and public performances. Bullfights are included into the fiesta’s agenda to add on to the merry making in the season.

The local authorities would organize the July and August fiesta called Veranos de la Villa or a Summer in the Village fiesta. There would be many cultural events happening to allow others to experience the local culture.

The Verbena de la Paloma festival comes on from August 6th for a week or so. This festival showcases Madrid’s best and popular traditions; complete with regional costumes. Regional dances called Chotis are performed.

Year End fiestas

Locals and tourists would enjoy the month of September where there are plenty of concerts and theatrical performances vakantiehuizen playa daro; time quickly flies when November continues with the famous International Jazz festival in Madrid.  

The year ends with a bang in December with the Christmas cribs festival at Plaza Mayor.
